Sophisticated, globally inspired commercial bank office Bank of Communications
Being the fifth-largest bank in mainland China, Bank of Communications chose Tétris to design and build their South Africa office in the heart of the Sandton business district in Johannesburg.
Making the most of the height of the building with the expansive views along the perimeter of the long office space, the exterior becomes part of the beauty of the interior design, a dynamic live-artwork that is different each day.
Upon entry through the glass doors, visitors are greeted by the view as they approach the white marble and timber reception counter that sits proudly in front of the Bank of Communications branding, applied to white large-scale Chromadek metal sheets. The client waiting area is characterised by clean lines and simple silhouettes, with furniture choices and colours echoing the bank’s brand. A custom-made rug lends a dynamic and vibrant touch to the otherwise restrained space. Round light fixtures highlight the waiting area, drawings the eye to the purpose-made wall feature. Constructed from Perspex round pegs set into Chromadek, the map shows the various locations the bank operates out of.
The client-facing meeting rooms are neat, with contemporary lines and carefully curated accessories. The end result is practically identical to the 3D renders the client approved, illustrating the degree of care that was taken to meet client expectations throughout the project.
As the team working within the open plan area require much focus, the desking solution provides each person with both privacy and ample storage. Tétris introduced visual interest with plants, allowing the generous sunshine that streams in to bring with it warmth and light. Each of the large executive offices that flank the open plan area house both a soft seating area and a sizable workstation.
A warmer timber finish and vibrant blue patterned wallpaper introduce warmth in the kitchen and canteen, complementing the cooler grey and white tones and creating break-away spaces for staff.
All elements in the Bank of Communications project were designed to meet the client’s very specific requirements and the project’s success lies in its simplicity and relevance to the bank’s brand.
